Position Title: Fifth Grade Literacy Lead

Reports to: Lower School Division Head

FLSA Status: Exempt

Employment Status: Full-time, 10 months

Start Date: August 2, 2021

Position Description

The Lower School lead teaching position is an exciting opportunity for an individual, dedicated to the academic, social, and emotional growth of young learners, to join a dynamic teaching faculty. The fifth-grade lead teacher will work alongside the fifth-grade team of specialists in a collaborative manner but will have the primary responsibility for planning, programming, teaching, evaluating, and reporting for all fifth-grade students in the area of literacy. Lead teachers work with a team of teachers base classroom and co-curricular teachers to create a child-centered environment for the students and a cooperative and positive adult working environment. The lead teacher is responsible for establishing relationships with students, encouraging them to communicate respectfully and to optimally develop their problem-solving skills, abilities, interests, and enthusiasm for learning. The fifth-grade lead literacy teacher will be responsible for a homeroom of fifth-grade students.

They involve themselves in areas of The Walker School beyond their classroom walls. The lead teacher is responsible for fulfilling all of his/her responsibilities in accordance with the mission and philosophy of The Walker School and the shared vision for transformative, innovative learning in the Lower School. While serving in the Lower School, all teachers should model ethical and professional behavior, accept personal responsibility for his/her actions, and demonstrate a commitment to the school, its mission, and its policies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Possesses strong knowledge of grade-level curriculum being taught and of those surrounding it
  • Uses best practices in teaching and learning, focused on differentiated instruction, to design and deliver instruction
  • Presents well-planned lessons with appropriate work within and outside of the classroom (with a focus on the integration of subject areas, problem-solving, and application)
  • Maintains accurate and comprehensive records of each childs performance and progress
  • Maintains and directs the appropriate behavior of students
  • Cares and nurtures the social and emotional needs of each child
  • Develops strong student relations and nurtures the whole child by effectively communicating through active listening and appropriate responses
  • Demonstrates effective and timely verbal and written communication with parents pertaining to a childs progress and needs as well as general information (through phone calls, emails, newsletters, website, conferences, and quarterly progress reports)
  • Maintains an organized, pleasant, and inviting environment that supports active learning
  • Integrates technology into the curriculum in a meaningful way that is suitable to the age and needs of the students and subject matter being taught
  • Demonstrates an ability and comfort to work closely with a teaching assistant and delegate tasks
  • Coordinates classroom-related activities and events (including field trips) that support grade-level or subject-specific curriculum
  • Participates in associated duties such as carpool, lunch, and recess
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Lower School Head

Core Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree
  • Experience working with elementary-aged students
  • Demonstrated commitment to The Walker Schools ideals: education for democracy, equity and inclusion, community service, multiculturalism, and environmental stewardship
  • Positive mindset, sense of humor, comfort with the quick pace of change, and openness to collaboration and experimentation
  • Openness to feedback and improvement

Preferred Qualifications

  • Elementary, Middle Grades, or Early Childhood degree (Masters degree preferred)
  • Experience and/or training in:
  • Responsive Classroom
  • Orton-Gillingham
  • Guided Reading
  • Reading and Writing Workshop
  • Handwriting without Tears
  • Project-based learning

  • Experience with technology integration and teaching remotely
